1 Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to his name;
worship the Lord in the splendour of his holiness.
3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is majestic.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon leap like a calf,
Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord strikes
with flashes of lightning.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the Lord twists the oaks
and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, ‘Glory!’
10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord is enthroned as King for ever.
11 The Lord gives strength to his people;
the Lord blesses his people with peace.
In light of all that has been going on right now in Korea, and trying to find answers to why something so terrible and shocking has happened, I find some comfort in the above Psalm. We cannot understand or comprehend why so many had to die in the depth of utter darkness of that cold water. I don’t understand it. I can’t believe it. Whenever I think of all those young people, those in their teens who innocently obeyed those misleading commands from irresponsible adults, my stomach churns inside me…and I cannot hold back the tears…all I can pray is that in their last moments they felt the loving presence of God and somehow went peacefully.
Lord, your voice is over the waters! Your glory and majesty thunders over the mighty waters! No water, no sea no matter how rough, tempestuous or deep is too overwhelming for you! You rise above these waters and you are mightier then them! You sit enthroned over the flood, the waters! Lord, I pray that your glory, majesty, power and omnipotence be revealed through this disaster! May all of Korea and the rest of the world encounter your glory and mighty presence which is beyond and over above this weak, fragile, selfish world! Enfold and wrap the families of the victims with your mighty presence and may they be given the strength to be able to go on….
In your name I pray. Amen.
